The discovery of the monastery
The research program started in 2012 in Egres.
The research program started in 2012 in Egres with the cooperation of the Banat Museum of Timisoara and the Pázmány Péter Catholic University. This was the time when the former ruins were discovered. The first task of the researchers working under the leadership of Dr. Daniela Tanase and Dr. Balázs Major was to define the place of the former monastery more precisely. The ruins still in existence in the 19th century were completely destroyed today leaving no visible trace of the monastery.
In November 2013, with the careful study of previous sources, aerial photography and geophysical research, we were able to determine the exact location and extention of the former buildings.
In November 2013, with the careful study of previous sources, aerial photography and geophysical research, we were able to determine the exact location and extention of the former buildings. Instrumental researches were led by Gábor Bertók, head of the Archaeological GIS Laboratory of PPKE. At that time, the stones which had been preserved from the former monastery, began to be measured. The important results of these researches were the inspiration for the progress, so the researchers decided to start the excavations.
