During the foundation of Egres, Peter was the abbey of Pontigny between 1177 and 1180 and became the leader of the order in 1181. Recent research has suggested that Peter was entrusted by the capitulum gererale with the supervision of the foundations in Hungary while he was the abbey of Pontigny but it seems that he also bear this task on his heart when he became the leader of the order.
